This Saturday, May 6, King Charles III was crowned at Westminter Abbey in London. His service as heir to the throne has been one of the longest, since it was 70 years, which makes him one of the monarchs with the longest years of preparation for the reign. In addition, at 74 years old, he has become the oldest king to have ascended the British throne. (See the family tree of Carlos III)

Before Carlos III ascended to the throne after the death of his mother Elizabeth II, in September 2022, only two monarchs had used the name Carlos. It is about Carlos I and Carlos II, who were father and son.

The history of these two kings was not the best, as the first was beheaded after a civil war in 1649. For his part, the second would regain the throne in 1660, but his relationship with Parliament was not the best. It took 350 years for another king to choose that name, perhaps because the previous ones were not the best.

Carlos I, the ‘tyrant king’

According to the portal ‘National Geographic History’, Carlos I became king in 1625, at the age of 25. From the beginning, he had problems with Parliament, which did not approve his marriage to Princess Henrietta Maria of France because they feared that she would influence him to grant greater rights to Catholics.

His relationship with parliament never improved. At one point, he even ruled absolutist. However, this led him to abuse his power, especially when establishing new taxes to finance his projects, some of them personal, such as collecting works of art.

Finally, in 1642 a civil war broke out that ended with the capture of Carlos. In 1649, the House of Commons (one of the two that made up the English Parliament, whose members were elected by suffrage) called a trial against the king. He was found guilty of high treason and was beheaded after a few days.

Carlos II, the last Catholic king

After Carlos I followed a republican period of eleven years, called the Commonwealth of England or Commonwealth. However, Later it was decided to restore the monarchy and Carlos II, son of the previous monarch, ascended the throne.

In 1660, he was crowned King of England and Ireland, reuniting the various kingdoms under his rule. For a time he had a good relationship with Parliament, but they decided to withdraw their support due to the numerous wars waged by his foreign policy.

For this reason, he decided to rule, as his father had done, without Parliament, until the day of his death in 1685.
