In the heart of the Central Sierras is the carolina. It is a small town that was chosen by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Nation to participate in the contest Best Tourism Villages. The competition, organized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization, seeks to select the best tourist villages on the planet.

With its 1200 inhabitants, It is one of the towns located at the highest altitude above sea level in Cuyo. Along its rustic stone paving, it shelters the story of the first gold prospectors in Argentina, a legacy that is kept alive in the memory of its people. The buildings of the mountain town, mostly stone houses, preserve the colonial style and the nostalgia of having been the birthplace of the mythical miners.

Originally, the town that was the cradle of the gold rush was called San Antonio de las Invernadas. the year was running 1794 when Viceroy Sobremonte, mayor governor of Córdoba del Tucumán, changed it to his current “La Carolina” as a tribute to King Carlos III of Spain. Located in an environment that evokes the stories and dreams of the miners, the town maintains its golden semblance over time, framed by the mountains that bring it closer to the sky and the whisper of water running in the streams.

Nowadays La Carolina is one of the main tourist destinations in San Luis and has a wide range of proposals for adults and children. Among them, stand out expeditions inside the mines, visits to the stone church and the historical House of Juan Crisóstomo Lafinur, Museum of Manuscript Poetry, among other. How is the contest

Until June 23, the World Tourism Organization received requests from the peoples of the 5 continents who seek to be recognized as one of the best in the world. The award given by the organization of the United Nations has the objective of using tourism as an engine for rural development and well-being. The winners will be officially announced at the end of 2023.
